Survey says\u2026humor! That\u2019s right\u2013 from the attendees\u2019 perspective, that special sauce that makes <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/hire-an-mc-for-corporate-events\/\">a wonderful emcee<\/a> is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humor.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll tell you right now\u2026it\u2019s laughter that they\u2019re after!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean that you must become a professional comedian to be a great event MC. It just means you need to showcase your unique sense of humor when you host a program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m here to help; I\u2019ve worked as a standup comedian, a comic magician, a joke writer, and an editor of several joke books. This chapter is called \u201cJokes,\u201d but I want to take you deeper than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let\u2019s talk about the five keys to creating humor:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>See Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/intros-and-outros-how-to-be-a-great-emcee\/\">Intros and Outros &#8211; How To Be A Great Emcee<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to make people laugh<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>#1. Humility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people think that silliness is the source of humor, and it can be. But the deepest well is humility, and this fits well with what we\u2019ve been talking about in other chapters of the book. You want to laugh <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your audience (never <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice that the word \u201chumor\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/wiki\/christian-terms\/what-does-humility-mean-in-the-bible-why-should-we-be-humble.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d have the same root. It actually goes back to being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for ways you can do self-deprecating\u2013 no, not self-defecating\u2013 humor (see what I did there?) in your presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t about putting yourself down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, it\u2019s about using a combination of humor and vulnerability to connect with others. If you can embrace a sense of humility and laugh at yourself, you become relatable to the event attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, we\u2019re all just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ans making our way through any way we can \u2013 let\u2019s enjoy a chuckle together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#2. Unexpected!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I could only choose one of the five keys of humor, it might be this one. Because a magic trick almost always ends with a surprise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#3.\u00a0 Magnify pain<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/authors\/steve-martin-quotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Martin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once said that comedy isn\u2019t pretty. What he was getting at is this: When we chuckle with other people, it\u2019s usually as we\u2019re telling stories about things that went wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You certainly don\u2019t want to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain with your humorous story. But you can look to pain as a source of humor that can become a shared experience of laughter and amusement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#4. Odd combinations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of great humor comes from mixing and matching. Think of the great play which became a movie, which then became a TV show called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Odd Couple.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a combination of Oscar Madison, who is a grouchy slob, and Felix Unger, who is a persnickety A-type.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having these two opposite personalities live together created some wonderful comedic situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By calling a very tall person and a much shorter person up to the platform, or an older and a younger participant, or an introvert and an extrovert, you can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people the humor that often exists in contrasts (not just tell them).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#5. Repeat, repeat, repeat<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a real secret of professional comedians. It\u2019s been called the call-back or the running gag\u2013 whatever you want to call it, make sure you use it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something magical happens in our brains when we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-science-of-laughter-and-why-it-also-has-a-dark-side-76463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience something repeatedly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is why little kids will say, \u201cHey Grandpa, tell me that joke again. You know, the one about\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When something happens during a session that makes the attendees laugh, you can make a call-back or reference it again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll notice that what happens is that the attendees will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laugh again. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They might even applaud!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are funny stories I like to tell that incorporate some of the keys we just discussed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bonus:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/housekeeping-how-to-be-a-great-emcee\/\">Housekeeping &#8211; How To Be A Great Emcee<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Let&#8217;s put these elements into action<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Humility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI turned my life around; I used to be miserable and depressed, and now I\u2019m depressed and miserable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Unexpected<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I\u2019ll tell the story of my son James when he was five years old. One day you\u2019ll take your grandson out for breakfast.\u201d James said, \u201cYeah, but you\u2019ll be dead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Magnify pain<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another funny one I like to use goes like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A man is in the hospital, and the doctor comes in and says, \u201cWell, I have good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patient says, \u201cWell, I guess the bad news first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor says, \u201cOkay here\u2019s the bad news: we are going to have to amputate your feet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patient says, \u201cOh that\u2019s horrible, what could the good news possibly be?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the doctor says, \u201cThe patient next door wants to buy your slippers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Odd combinations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you get when you cross a Jehovah\u2019s witness and an atheist?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who knocks on your door for no apparent reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Repeat, repeat, repeat<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehartford.com\/business-insurance\/strategy\/hiring-first-employee\/conduct-interviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an interviewee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, speaker, or attendee says or does something that makes everyone giggle, I\u2019ll slip it back into my commentary at fitting moments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Equally important as the funny lines themselves is <\/b><b><i>how you deliver them.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your delivery can make or break the bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we have covered the five keys to creating humor, I want to go over some tips on how to deliver<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your funny quips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to deliver naturally funny jokes<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>#1. Say it seriously.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad jokes are silly. But tell them with a straight face. The more you deliver the line like it\u2019s a serious thing, the funnier it will be!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#2. Emphasize a key word.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, I&#8217;ll show you:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will get a bigger laugh\u2013 okay, more like a giant groan\u2013 when you tell this dad joke and punch up the words \u201cpie rates\u201d at the end. Like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA slice of mango pie in Jamaica is $2.50 and $3.00 in Puerto Rico. These are the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pie rates <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Caribbean.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#3. Slow down.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest mistake that joke tellers make? They rush. Take your time. By this, I don\u2019t mean to make the story longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean make the story very clear. If you speak too quickly and gloss over the details, the attendees might not follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, take your time with the premise\/setup. And then\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#4. Pause before the punch line.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This might be the most powerful tip of all. When you wait a beat \u2013 about 2 full seconds \u2013 before you get to the joke\u2019s ending, it really makes it POP (pardon the pun as it relates to dad jokes).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you give a full pause for a moment, even if it feels almost awkward. Then, BAM!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You hit them with the punchline. Trust me. This will create a bigger impact and result in more laughter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>#5. Tell those same lines as often as you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share them at home, at work, at play, or even with new people you meet. Don\u2019t try to remember dozens of jokes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just get great at telling a couple of your favorites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A funny line may be old to you, but it\u2019s probably new to whoever you&#8217;re telling it to. Remember to <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/what-is-the-role-of-the-master-of-ceremonies\/\">master the words<\/a>, the delivery, and the timing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you feel that you are not the best teller of humorous stories or puns, you can polish up a couple of gems and pull them out in an extemporaneous way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also open up your welcome or self-introduction time with a well-placed joke.
