How can you measure an employee&#8217;s productivity if you don&#8217;t know what it means to you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, productivity looks different in a nonprofit fundraising office than it does in a research laboratory. You wouldn&#8217;t necessarily use the same method to measure employee performance in both places.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/productivity#:~:text=Definition%20of%20productivity,organisms%20is%20made%20by%20producers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Merriam-Webster<\/b><\/a><b> defines productivity as the quality or state of being productive, or yielding results.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, it is only natural that <\/span><b>measuring productivity goes hand in hand with measuring results<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But be careful &#8211; the equation for <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/importance-of-audience-analysis\/\">productivity analysis<\/a> is not that simple. Unless you&#8217;re dealing solely with robots, <\/span><b>productivity is a human effort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Which means <\/span><b>it is subject to human needs, emotions, and mistakes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful not to expect robot-style productivity from human beings. <\/span><b>Expect human-style productivity.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Let&#8217;s talk about different types of productivity<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few ways to approach measuring workplace productivity. I&#8217;d like to introduce you to four major strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Management by objectives<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my time <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/hire-an-mc-for-corporate-events\/\">as an event emcee<\/a>, I&#8217;ve seen some managers who like to measure productivity by <\/span><b>objectives, or goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, they set the business&#8217; goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, employee output is measured by how much they contribute to the company&#8217;s goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method can lean more qualitative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method requires frequent check-ins to observe employee progress. It is a hands-on choice, but that can have many benefits, such as increased communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Quantitative productivity in the workplace<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Quantitative&#8221; refers to the <\/span><b>amount<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of something. Therefore, they choose to measure employee productivity by <\/span><b>how much money each individual employee earns (or loses) the company<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is certainly simple to measure productivity by profit. As we discussed earlier, though, <\/span><b>numbers alone don&#8217;t tell an entire human story.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A truly comprehensive system for measuring productivity will take a variety of factors into account.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Total factor productivity, or multifactor productivity<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a term used in economics. It refers to <\/span><b>the ratio of output to input<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basically, it can accurately calculate how much can be produced from a specific set of inputs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This is a more<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Total_factor_productivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>mathematical approach<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if that is how you process information most effectively. What do I mean?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>First, consider factors outside of your employees&#8217; control. For example:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/life\/parenting\/g29548871\/best-online-tutoring-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>tutoring center<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has had fewer sign-ups than it did this time last year. Could it be that more students are applying to <\/span><b>test-optional schools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer kids are enrolled in your <\/span><b>summer camp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year than last. Could parents be finding more cost effective options due to the <\/span><b>economic recession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>programmers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your staff are writing fewer lines of code per hour. Could this be because their company-provided <\/span><b>equipment is becoming outdated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Then, ask yourself how you can support employee performance:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ll discuss this more later, but <\/span><b>how can you set your employees up for success?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are small teams being <\/span><b>overworked<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to save labor costs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are employees asked to complete tasks with <\/span><b>little to no advance notice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you offer <\/span><b>professional developmen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t to help staff learn skills like <\/span><b>time management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the <\/span><b>labor hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reasonable?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you clearly <\/span><b>communicated the expected output<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to each specific employee? They should be aware of their expected productivity level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>#3: Understand the Current Baseline<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the unit of measurement you select, <\/span><b>what results are you <\/b><b><i>currently<\/i><\/b><b> yielding?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What results has your team yielded for the past few quarters or years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to know this before setting out on a productivity improvement plan. Ready for the commitment?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>It takes time to accurately measure and calculate productivity. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes even more time to identify trends and patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your choice to measure employee productivity will reveal extremely useful information about your business. Their responses will probably inspire you to make a few changes and redefine &#8220;productivity&#8221; as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#6: Define Your Goals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you&#8217;ve done your homework, it&#8217;s time to define your goals!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Let&#8217;s talk about KPIs.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are quantifiable performance measures over time. Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/how-to-fundraise-virtually\/\">A fundraiser<\/a>&#8216;s KPI might be <\/span><b>how much money they raise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a fiscal year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teacher&#8217;s KPI might be the <\/span><b>percentage of students who pass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their final exam on the first try<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hadviser.com\/haircuts-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hairdresser&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> KPI might be <\/span><b>the percentage of 5-star reviews they receive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in one calendar year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sense?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define your KPIs based on your business, your results, and your employees&#8217; feedback. <\/span><b>Don&#8217;t pick too many to measure at once<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; that can be overwhelming and discouraging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Start small.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Communicate goals to the employees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee effectiveness has been defined as <\/span><b>the ability to achieve set goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, be sure to inform them of the KPIs you are tracking, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will probably need their help in order to track them effectively.
