I just used word the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audience <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKnow your audience\u201d is the first rule of <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/hire-funny-keynote-motivational-speakers\/\">dynamic public speaking<\/a>. It\u2019s also one of the major keys to being a great emcee. It\u2019s worth repeating: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Know your audience.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At every event you emcee, your goal is to please the people who invited you to host AND delight their audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter will show you how to know them and delight them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>See Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/clock-how-to-be-a-great-emcee\/\">Clock &#8211; How To Be A Great Emcee<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE Compliment You Want<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best compliment you can receive when you serve as the MC? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing \u201cYou made it fun\u201d is always nice. \u201cYou did a fine job\u201d is another bit of praise that will make you smile. But hands down, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compliment that means you really nailed it as an emcee is\u2026 <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long have you worked for us?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hear this, it says a lot about the work you put in before the event. It means you went the extra mile and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made their world matter to you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It means you care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what are the steps you can take to ensure that you make the audience feel like you are part of their team?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the secret:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do a deep dive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and learn about the people\u2014and the unique culture\u2014of this group before you ever step foot on stage (or get on screen).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover all you can about the organization<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laser in on the uniqueness of the people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out who the key leaders are\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncover things that will remind your attendees that they are wonderful people\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an audience member walks up to you after the event and says, \u201cHey, you knew all about US!\u201d They win and you win.\u00a0 This is only possible when you do a deep dive into the organization and audience <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the meeting date. Do your homework <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior to <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the test: the in-person or online event you are emceeing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Do Your Homework <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you were in school, if you were like me, you would often cram for a quiz the night before. Maybe, like me, you got OK grades. But when you put the time into studying the subject matter before the exam, you did much better. Maybe you had to know the answers to 10 questions. When you took the time to learn the answers, it felt good to earn that \u201cA+\u201d grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same approach is required if you want to become an \u201cA+\u201d host. Put the time into knowing your audience. Personally, I invest a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 3-5 hours into this kind of detective work prior to every meeting I emcee.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great investment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to know (and love!) this group of people. It\u2019s an investment of your time. But it\u2019s worth every moment when you learn to become an expert diver. Here\u2019s what you need to discover:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get The Scoop About the Group<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Have the Internal Program Manager Answers to These 7 Questions:<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>What is the name of this group, org, company, association?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important: This might not be the name on their building, or website. You need to know: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What name do they call themselves? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4><b>Who is the leader of this group?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out: Does she\/he repeat certain phrases? One Senior V.P. who led the team I was serving, was known for saying to his team, \u201cWe refuse to lose!\u201d What else can you discover about this leader? Does she\/he have certain stories, habits or characteristics that would be fun (not hurtful) to joke about? What is this individual\u2019s great strength? How are they celebrated? in your <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/what-is-the-role-of-the-master-of-ceremonies\/\">role as master of ceremonies<\/a>, you want to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate this person! <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What unique language does this audience share?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Become familiar with the \u201cinside jargon\u201d and when appropriate the inside jokes that this audience appreciates. Do they say things that unite them?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead the way.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serve the customer<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety first, second and third.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are Del Point, and we deliver!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Sometimes this special language is on the company website. But other times it is the \u201cinsider\u201d language that is only used internally. Ask the org\u2019s meeting coordinator about the language that unites this group. You want to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know how they talk about themselves.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you weave some of the group\u2019s one-of-a-kind<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buzz words, special company language, and acronyms into the program? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: You might say, \u201cBefore I introduce our special guest who will deliver our keynote message. I want to remind you that we are Del Point, and we deliver!\u201d (They will likely cheer you for learning and saying something this about them).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What are their pleasure and pain points?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful here. This does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean you want to cause pain. The two things to learn here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A) What problem does this organization solve for their customers or members? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B) What frustrations do they experience?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: government regulations, competitors cutting prices, slow copy machines, waiting for parts from vendors. When you can let an audience know that you celebrate their gains and relate to their pains, they will love you as their host. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Besides the top leader, does this group have one \u201cpersonality\u201d who is known and loved by everybody?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crucial thing to learn here is what most everybody in attendance knows (and respects) about this individual. Sometimes this is the Founder of the company. \u201cJohn has been our leader for 25 years!\u201d But it might be the beloved receptionist or head of security who is the crowd favorite. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out as much as you can about this special man or woman. Have someone introduce you to him\/her before the program begins when you are on site. When you know who this person is and mention and\/or involve them into the program in a fun and positive way, you will have scored major points with the audience. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What are the different roles, jobs, and positions, of the attendees?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you give shout-outs to the various sub-groups within your audience, you demonstrate that you everyone in attendance is valued at the event. Lead them in a round of applause. \u201cBefore we introduce some of our award winners tonight, can we thank our sponsors, techs, salespeople, and admin team for all they do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What should you avoid saying\/doing during the program?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there any topics or issues \u2014 either within this group or industry\u2013that are off limits? Ask the program director: <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides politics,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is there anything you do not want mentioned during our event?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main thing: Discover positive information about this group and the people who will be attending this meeting, gathering, or special event. Avoid repeating information that might reflect poorly on anyone associated with the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bonus:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/blog\/b-how-to-be-a-great-emcee-build-rapport\/\">Build Rapport &#8211; How To Be A Great Emcee<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Huge Value of a Pre-Event Call\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request answers to the above questions via email <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your Zoom or phone meeting!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review their answers on your call. Let the meeting leaders know that you will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be able to use all the information they provide to you. But all if it serves a purpose\u2014to educate you about the organization, the leadership team, and most important of all, the attendees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t stress this enough: <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to do a deep dive into the group who has invited you to emcee. <\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how are you going to get the best of this information into your brain and into the program?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Your Secret Weapon<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s get super-practical. Review the meeting organizer\u2019s answers. Discuss the agenda and audience on your pre-event call. Then convert the \u201cbest of\u201d the deep dive research into one 3 x 5 card you can review at-a-glance. This becomes like a \u201ccheat sheet\u201d you can refer to again and again before and during the program. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s simple. It works. And it looks like this: The word <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D.I.V.E. gives you the framework:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this group <strong>DO<\/strong>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are the key <strong>INDIVIDUALS<\/strong>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will I make this audience feel like <strong>VIPs<\/strong>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I repeat certain <strong>EXPRESSIONS<\/strong>?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what a simple notecard looks like using my DIVE method. When your research is complete, transfer the key ideas to a simple card (or use the Notes app of your phone).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review it during the days leading up to the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring it with you to the meeting and put the 3 x 5 card in your pocket. By then you will have already internalized the information. And it\u2019s great to glance at this card before the program begins, during breaks, and as you listen to the other presenters. You want the key information top of mind during the meeting.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what it looks like on a 3 x 5 card:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><i>4 Things to About Silver Securities Event:<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">D<\/span>O?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This group provides retirees with a secure financial future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I<\/span>NDIVIDUALS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jen O\u2019Leary is the VP of Sales. This is her meeting. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tony Rodriquez is the sales rep of the year. Julia Simmons is the meeting planner. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their biggest customer, Terry McMillan will be in attendance too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">V<\/span>IPS:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You guys improve lives. You help people sleep at night. How great is that?!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">E<\/span>XPRESSIONS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The reps tell clients: \u201cInvest like Warren Buffet, live like Jimmy Buffet.\u201d <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their mantra: \u201cTreat clients like gold. Have them invest in silver.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Names are the Name of the Game <\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names are crucial. Learn to say them. And say them correctly. It starts with the name of the company, organization, or sponsors of the meeting. What is the name of this group?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask them.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will tell you this again. It\u2019s important. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must find out how to refer to the organization<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has invited you to <a href=\"https:\/\/adamchristing.com\/hire-an-mc-for-corporate-events\/\">emcee their event<\/a>. Imagine an emcee hosting an alumni event for UCLA and calling it \u201cUcklah\u201d? You know how to say U.C.L.A. It\u2019s letter-by-letter. You know that NASA is pronounced differently, it\u2019s not \u201cN.A.S.A.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cNASA.\u201d Find out how to say the name of the company, non-profit, college, business, church, or event bride and groom you are representing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s look at a few examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Bright Group has hired, you\u2026would you pronounce B.R.I.G.H.T. as \u201cBright\u201d or would you say each letter?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you were emceeing an event for Southern Nazarene University, would you say the full name, or do they prefer to be called SNU?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How would you thank The Association of Pediatric Dentistry? Is there a short name for this organization?\u00a0 Note: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, it\u2019s best to say the full name of the org at the top of the program, and then use their short-hand version as the program continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Deeper You Dig the Better You Get <\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are other ways you can become a master of the deep dive:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch YouTube clips about the company\/product\/service<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the group\u2019s website and read the About Us page<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out what other people are saying about this group, i.e., customer testimonials and reviews. Note: Only repeat the good stuff.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, buy something that they are selling or promoting so you can taste the experience they create for their customers, donors, etc. It\u2019s so powerful to be able to say: \u201cI just bought one of the vehicle air fresheners you guys sell. It\u2019s so awesome, I don\u2019t want to get out of my car!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poke some fun at the \u201cvillain\u201d this group opposes or competes against.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note:\u00a0 Be careful here. If in doubt, leave it out. Make sure to get the green light before mentioning this \u201cbad guy.\u201d Always avoid controversial topics. Here is a playful example: \u201cHey team, I just made a New Year\u2019s resolution: I\u2019m never going to buy my supplements from XYZ (the villain) again! I just became your newest customer after visiting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> website!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let the audience know you have enjoyed finding out about them!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe more I learn about you guys\u2026the more impressed I get. Wow, you have gone 12 years with a perfect factory safety record. Give yourselves a hand!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter has provided you with the tools you need to know your audience. Remember your mission with the deep dive. You want this audience to know and feel that YOU love them and what they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you have the questions to ask before the event.
