A mix-up that surprised you while picking your child up from school? The sound of a squeaking chair at a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inopportune moment?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the speaker, your humorous stories are all fair game!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>One-Liners<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You guessed it &#8211; one-liners are jokes told in just one sentence. Deliver one-liners smartly and you will have the room in stitches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Observational<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seinfeld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier &#8211; that show is a classic example of observational humor! Observational jokes comment on the absurdity of everyday experiences and are great to add to your speeches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent example of observational humor in television would be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abbott Elementary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each episode tells a story about the everyday joys and frustrations that can come with working at a public elementary school in Philadelphia &#8211; and finds a way to create humor and heart in every moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Topical<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical humor pokes fun at current events, be it the news, celebrity culture, or the latest Tik Tok trend. A dash of topical humor, when used appropriately, can grab your audience&#8217;s attention and be an asset to your funny speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you must stay aware of the client&#8217;s needs. If they prefer that politics and pop culture stay out of your presentation for fear of rubbing an audience member the wrong way, you must respect this. In fact, it can be safer to stay away from topical humor unless you know you have the right audience for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Self-Deprecating<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-deprecating jokes are all about finding humor in your own flaws. It&#8217;s great to be able to laugh at yourself, but be careful not to use so much self-deprecating humor that it makes your audience feel uncomfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#5: Tone Is Your Friend<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same vein as physicality, <\/span><b>your voice is an incredibly effective tool<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for making folks laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Do I Mean?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say you&#8217;re telling an anecdotal joke about your niece&#8217;s sixth birthday party. Sure, you could use your everyday intonation to &#8220;play&#8221; the various roles at the party. But&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wouldn&#8217;t it be funnier to give each character a distinct intonation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your six year-old niece&#8217;s high-pitched, bell-like voice. Your brother&#8217;s gruff, Midwestern tone. The angelic, sing-song-y sound of the actor playing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/princess.disney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disney princess<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to entertain the kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each character in the story is another opportunity for creativity, and for laughs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Let&#8217;s Take a Tip from Actors<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when you&#8217;re not playing a character other than yourself, your voice is still an incredibly useful instrument. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Your voice is the audience&#8217;s guide.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Softness versus loudness. Lightning-quick speech versus indulgent slowness. Serious versus playful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever you speak, <\/span><b>you make a million little choices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Try your best to put yourself in the audience&#8217;s shoes &#8211; wouldn&#8217;t you prefer to watch someone with great command of the room and confidence in their presentation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know I would!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#6: Bring People Together<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your audience is full of different people &#8211; many of whom you don&#8217;t know, and who will find different things humorous. Here are some tips for making everyone feel comfortable and ready to laugh:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Speak to Universal Experiences<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to do your absolute best not to ostracize anyone in the audience. Your client has hired you to help everyone feel comfortable. So, what is the best way to go about doing this in a diverse society?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When writing your speech, focus on <\/span><b>humor that is a testament to the human experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that most people will relate to it. Adults, kids, everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t mean to be vague &#8211; the opposite, in fact. <\/span><b>Specificity is funny.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Here are some examples:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain human experiences with which every single person can identify:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about a time when you felt <\/span><b>embarrassed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teenager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teenager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a joke about an <\/span><b>insecurity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you had growing up, and still have to this day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprise the audience with a weird <\/span><b>dream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you had recently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep guests laughing with anecdotes about <\/span><b>lessons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you&#8217;ve learned the hard way.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Balance Listening and Speaking<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, okay, I know you&#8217;re giving a speech &#8211; that sort of implies that you&#8217;re talking. But listening is an equally important factor in your delivery of a hilarious speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be scary, but practice including pauses in your speech. Depending on the joke, the audience may need a few seconds to digest it before they begin laughing. Sometimes, your silence <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most entertaining part &#8211; if allowed, the audience will often fill that silence with laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>And, Scene!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I&#8217;ve said before, humor is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/subjective\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subjective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; that will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven&#8217;t been getting the laughs you&#8217;ve hoped for, please talk kindly to yourself.
